A One-of-a-Kind Wedding at Dover Hall with Esther and Jason

October 3, 2024

If you’re hoping to have a one-of-a-kind wedding celebration and are looking for fresh ideas, you’re in the right place! As a Charlottesville wedding photographer who’s captured many love stories in the area, this one stands out as one of my absolute favorites.

Esther and Jason are one of the kindest, most caring, and creative couples I’ve ever worked with, and everything about their wedding was stunning.

The little details they poured into every aspect of their day were so thoughtful, and that’s exactly what I’m sharing with you today. If you’re ready to discover some truly unique wedding ideas, then let’s dive in!

How these two created their one-of-a-kind wedding

These two chose an indoor wedding, celebrating their love on a warm August afternoon. From the elegance of the décor to the personal touches that reflected who they are, every aspect of their wedding was elevated and refined—just like them.

Here’s a glimpse of what they did to make this day pure magic. Feel free to get some inspiration for your own wedding!

They chose a European-vibe wedding venue

Esther and Jason decided to get married at Dover Hall, a stunning venue just a 10-minute drive from the Short Pump area of Richmond, VA, and easily accessible from Charlottesville. This is one of my absolute favorite Richmond wedding venues.

This epic wedding venue combines classic English aesthetics— described as “English Tudor vibes”—and is beautifully nestled among the rolling hills of Manakin-Sabot, Virginia.

There’s a blend of the timelessness of the old architecture with modern design here, all in a sophisticated and peaceful setting. To me, it feels like stepping into a romantic fairytale. It’s like getting married in a castle but with a modern, elevated twist.

Inside, the venue features soaring high ceilings, arched windows, stonework walls, elegant chandeliers, and hardwood floors.

Plus, the huge fireplace and windows create a warm, romantic ambiance. Outside, with the venue’s architecture and manicured grounds, it makes you feel like you’re transported to another era and in the UK.

And of course, the estate’s massive 38,000-square-foot structure made it the gorgeous backdrop for their big yet intimate wedding. Truly a dream location!

Elegant florals

Another thing that I loved about their wedding was the florals. The team from FIELD really outdid themselves. Esther’s bouquet was made of wildflowers, which added a touch of nature to the super elegant and refined villa setting.

For the decor, they went with these tall, forest-y climbing plants that wrapped around the massive fireplace at the front. On the tables, they used delicate, white bell flowers as centerpieces, paired with standing candles that created a soft, romantic glow.

Oh, and the menus! They had adorable yet classy little bows attached, adding that extra touch of European charisma to the whole setup and the flowers.

The whole decor was a perfect combination of wild, natural, and refined—totally captured the feel of the day.

Two versions of wedding outfits

What made this wedding truly authentic was how much Esther and Jason honored their culture and heritage.

They started with a beautiful Western-style ceremony—Esther wore a stunning white wedding dress with a V-neck cut, and Jason looked so sharp in his classic black tuxedo.

But what made it even more special was their outfit change. To honor their Korean roots, they switched into traditional Korean wedding attire but with a modern, elevated twist.

As you can see in the photo above, they did a beautiful job to blend tradition with their own personal style. And they both looked so amazing in both outfit versions!

Of course, we had to capture a few shots of them in their stunning Korean wedding attires, too. I absolutely loved snapping moments like them walking down the stairs pointing at their loved ones and the guests clapping and cheering them on.

Or that shot of them from behind, walking hand in hand toward the fireplace? Pure magic—it beautifully showcased their outfits from every angle!

Top notch planning

Esther and Jason teamed up with the amazing team at Swoon Soiree, full-service event planners and boutique wedding designers known for their incredible creativity and attention to detail.

The Swoon Soiree team tied everything together so beautifully, making sure every little detail was perfect. They made the entire day flow effortlessly, allowing Esther and Jason to be fully present and soak in all the magic of their epic day.

Photography with a dash of nostalgia

The best part for me? Esther and Jason fully trusted me to capture their day in my own creative way. They gave me the freedom to tap into my cinematography brain and create photos that felt like dreamy, nostalgic goodness.

I had so much fun playing with light, color, and the movement of the party to give them images that truly looked and felt like the memories of their night.

Plus, the venue—this incredible European-inspired space with its dreamy & dramatic vibe—and the elevated simplicity of the decor made it the perfect setting to get creative and bring their vision to life.

One of my favorite cinematic shots from the day is the black and white photo of Esther walking down the spiraling staircase.

She’s looking down, her wedding dress beautifully draping over the steps and taking up all the space. It’s such a timeless, elegant moment that really captures the vibe of the place and the wedding.

And, they had fun and trusted their team

These two were honestly the cutest couple, and they completely trusted their team—every single one of us. That trust is what made everything come together so beautifully! It allowed them to just let go, dance all night, and fully celebrate their love.

They were dancing everywhere—during their first dance, on the dance floor with all their guests, and even privately outside, just the two of them in the garden.

It was like their own little movie moment. You could just feel the love and joy in every step they took.

Final thoughts on one-of-a-kind wedding ideas
